Lake County cop surrenders on rape charge

CROWN POINT — A Lake County sheriff’s officer charged with rape turned himself to the Lake County Jail on Friday and posted bond, according to state police.

Nicholas “Nick” Medarno, 34, of Crown Point, posted a bond of $100,000 surety and $10,000 cash, police said.

A grand jury indicted Medarno on Thursday on charges of rape, attempted rape, sexual battery and confinement, according to state police.

The indictment alleges Medarno knowingly or intentionally had sexual intercourse with the alleged victim between Jan. 10, 2013, and June 30, 2014.

An attorney for Lake County Sheriff John Buncich said Thursday night Buncich plans to file disciplinary charges with the department’s Merit Board next week seeking Medarno’s firing.

Buncich will also seek merit board approval for temporary suspension from duty without pay while the charges are pending, attorney John Bushemi said in an email.

Medarno, a patrolman, has approximately 10 1/2 years of service with the Sheriff’s Department and is a patrolman. He is currently on leave as a police officer for the Sheriff’s Department, according to a release from Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter.
